Pop Chart (Week 9, 2021)

After African artists dominated last week, this week's chart is a more international affair, with artists from the UK making a splash in the new entries. Indonesian singer/songwriter GANGGA takes the #1 spot this week, with many of the top artists from last time holding steady.

Indonesian singer/songwriter GANGGA tops this week’s Instrumental Pop Trending Chart, thanks in part to a shout out on Twitter from Taeyong, vocalist from K-Pop boyband NCT, in a video that now has 314k views. GANGGA gained 3.4k new followers off the back of the tweet, bringing his total to over 12,000. A combination of solid streaming and social growth has boosted GANGGA’s Ix score to 82, a 4 point increase in a week.

ELIO, Gabzy and Amaarae maintain their respective positions from last week’s chart, each of them growing their Ix score by 3 points by maintaining growth on streaming and socials. Nigerian artist Tay Iwar also returns from last week in 8th place, up one place. This week, his track ‘1985’ was added to the Spotify editorial playlist Afro Party Anthems, boosting his total playlist followers by 16%.

New entries this week come in the form of country pop singer/songwriter Roman Alexander, who is HOT thanks to an inclusion in Spotify’s 6.3 million follower Hot Country playlist, leading to a 6% increase in Spotify followers for the artist. Ayra Starr is in 6th place, proving the impact of Nigerian music for a second week in a row. Her Spotify followers have jumped by a massive 76% over the past week, with her song ‘Away’ included in the 700k follower African Heat playlist.

From the UK, heartfelt singer/songwriter Micky enters the chart at number 9, with a 19% increase in his Spotify following since he was added to frtyfve’s Calming Acoustic playlist.
