Pop Chart (Week 29, 2021)

From alt R&B to art pop and country, this week's Pop Chart has it all, with some artists finding success through TikTok and others relying on a good old fashioned sync. Many of the artists in this week's chart have appeared previously, suggesting sustained Hot Streaks as a result of continued streaming and social growth.

Four out of the ten artists on this week’s Pop Chart have appeared previously, with Alt. R&B artist 80Purppp rising from #2 to #1 thanks to the continued popularity of his track ‘Hex’ on TikTok. Now featuring in over 27k videos on the app, the track has picked up 10 million new streams in the 4 weeks since our last Pop Chart, with editorial playlist support from Spotify holding steady.

At #2 this week is dreamy art pop singer-songwriter SPELLLING is riding high following a rare 10/10 review from Anthony Fantano on his YouTube channel TheNeedleDrop. Known for being infamously stingy with perfect scores, this shoutout from Fantano earned SPELLLING over 6,000 new Spotify followers overnight. SPELLING has achieved hundreds of thousands of streams across their new album, despite no editorial support from Spotify, proving the influence of TheNeedleDrop on experimental artists.

At #3, Indonesian acoustic singer-songwriter Yahya returns after dropping off the last chart. Yahya’s track ‘keepyousafe’ remains popular on Indonesian TikTok, featuring in over 14k videos, which has translated into over 9 million streams on Spotify and 2.2 million YouTube views. Meanwhile, a huge sync on Love Island landed British singer-songwriter Samuel Jack on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart and boosted his following on the streaming platform by 14%.

Country pop artist Sammy Arriaga also returns to the chart off the back of new release ‘On God’, with a 22% increase in his Spotify following since the track was released. The Cuban-American has over 320k followers on TikTok, with one of his recent videos racking up 1.7m views. Kaylee Rose returns from our last chart, this time at #6, following up on the promise of her viral TikTok by releasing the track ‘Almost There’.

Our #7 artist Yoza featured earlier this week as a Hot Artist Alert thanks to success on TikTok, which is also the name of the game for #8 entry Hayden Coffman, who has seen multiple videos teasing his upcoming track ‘Better Off’ crack 100k views. This boosted Coffman’s Spotify following by 50% over the past week as new fans anticipate the track’s release.

Wrapping things up, Irish singer-songwriter Lea Heart has seen 300k views on TikTok over the past week promoting her upcoming music. TikTok is Heart’s biggest platform in terms of followers with 88k, while her tracks feature in Spotify editorial playlists A Breath of Fresh Eire and Wholesome. Finally, British artist Scott Quinn is riding high off the release of new EP ‘BETTER FOR ME’, with single ‘Hands Across the Table’ featuring in New Pop UK alongside the likes of BRIT award winner Griff.
