Indie Chart (Week 8, 2021)

Female artists from the USA dominate this week's Indie Trending Chart, with a variety of subgenres making an appearance, from R&B to folk and Americana.

American singer/songwriter Joy Oladokun takes pole position in this week’s Instrumental Indie Chart. A swathe of Spotify editorial support, including placements on the Totally Stress Free and Winter Acoustic playlists, has put Oladokun’s total Spotify playlist following at almost 5 million and led to consistent Spotify follower growth over the year.

This week’s indie chart is dominated by up-and-coming female artists from a variety of indie sub-genres, including R&B singer/songwriters ROE and St. Panther, and folk from Cassandra Jenkins. All three have seen significant editorial support from Spotify in recent weeks.

Outside of US artists, who make up eight out of the ten artists on this list, indie rock band False Heads rep for the UK and Vaarwell come from Portugal. False Hands feature alongside Declan McKenna and Catfish and the Bottlemen in Spotify’s Rock Save the Queen playlist, while Vaarwell feature in a mixture of Spotify curated and high profile user-generated playlists.
