Every week this Pride month, we’ll be hand-picking some of the most exciting up-and-coming LGBTQI+ talent in the world. Our first list covers a rainbow of genres from sunny lo-fi R&B to gothic Dutch art pop. Be sure to check out all of the artists mentioned below.
R&B singer-songwriter Lo Knowles blends smooth old school R&B melodies with a more contemporary bedroom pop production style, creating a sound that is truly her own. Her single ‘California Girl’, released earlier this year, received editorial attention from Spotify and currently features in the Out Now and Alternative Pride playlists. Meanwhile, ‘Scrimmage (Remix)’ - which features Huck and SAIAH - finds itself in the Low Key and Alternative R&B playlists, putting Lo Knowles’ total playlist followers close to 2.5 million.
Joviale first came to our attention when she went HOT on our platform in late May following the release of her ‘Hurricane Belle’ EP. Since then, she has continued to grow her profile at an accelerated rate, with playlist inclusions in Fresh Finds and H&M In Store Music and a 3 point boost to her Instrumental Ix Score - our proprietary measure of social and streaming growth.
Irish electropop singer-songwriter Tim Chadwick kicked off 2021 with the release of his EP ‘Timothy’ in March, containing singles ‘Favourite Song’ and ‘Only Me’ which have over 300k Spotify streams between them. Since ‘Timothy’ dropped, Tim Chadwick’s Instagram following has grown by 30% as he continues to make a name for himself outside of his native country. In addition to his tracks featuring on Irish Spotify playlists, Chadwick now features on massive international upbeat lists such as Wholesome and Happy Pop Hits.
Releasing a steady stream of singles over the past year, globetrotting pop artist FLAVIA has become a prominent voice in LGBTQ+ activism, shining a light on transgender, non-binary and gender-nonconforming individuals in the music video for her track ‘THEM’. In addition to mainstream playlist attention in Fresh Finds and Chilled Pop Hits, FLAVIA’s music can be found in big Irish playlists An Alternative Eire and PRIDE: Dublin.
Dutch alt-pop artist REINDIER in truly an island onto themselves, crafting an audiovisual experience like no other. This can be seen in the sheer breadth of editorial playlist sports they feature in, including Queer as Folk, A Shot of Indie, as well as the Dutch playlist Rustig & Mooi (translating to Calm & Beautiful) and the ‘edgy’ playlist Karakter.
