Top 5 Unsigned Artists In The World Right Now

Music, A&R
24 Jan 2018
by Josh Hannen

We’ve recently rolled out our online music scouting platform TalentAI to the music industry. The tool utilises Spotify and social API data with applied AI processes to unearth the fastest growing unsigned artists and new tracks. Currently in closed beta we are already powering global A&R teams from across the industry. Using the tool, here is our pick of the unsigned artists that are already smashing it in 2018. Check back on our blog each month for updates:

1) Cautious Clay - total playlist following up +4.32m

Following the release of his impressive debut single ‘Cold War’ (2017), Brooklyn based unsigned multi-instrumentalist Cautious Clay has dropped his latest effort ‘Juliet + Ceasar’. Aspiring to make his music innovative and truly artistic, with his new single Cautious Clay offers a teaser of what we can expect to hear on his forthcoming Blood Type EP, out in February. The track is soulful and infectious, exploring the contrast between the insecurity of relationships and the lessons learnt from them. TalentAI data highlights his future potential, with a 4.32m increase in playlist followers in the last 7 days alone (w/c 15/01/18).

2) 88GLAM - total playlist following up +2.17m

New Toronto rap duo and  88GLAM turned heads after The Weeknd appeared in their “12” music video, racking up 1.53m views since its release in November. Derek Wise (signed to XO) and 88 Camino have now dropped their second music video from their self-titled debut release. Fellow Canadian and XO records affiliate NAV also features on ‘Bali’. The track sees the duo back and forth with Wise’s commanding baritone guiding the wordplay and Camino’s tenor locking the tone. Added to Mellow Beats, Viral Hits and Hip-Hop Central on Spotify, TalentAI data shows their total playlist following rise to 2.17m with the release.

3) Josiah & the Bonnevilles - total playlist following up to 3.93m

Having written the track back in 2011, when he was only 22, Josiah Leming did not expect that ‘Back to Tennessee’ would find its place as the opening track on his new album. The track written over 6 years ago and recorded 20 times has broken onto Fresh Folk, Roots Rising and Infinite Acoustic playlists. According to TalentAI, this brings Josiah and his band to 3.93m playlist followers. The track itself is a bittersweet farewell, fuelled by the emotional power harnessed in Josiah’s voice, the lyrical intimacy and nostalgic intensity.

4) Luna Shadows - reached #7 on US Global Viral Chart

Unsigned multi-instrumentalist, writer, producer and singer Luna Shadows runs her own show from Los Angeles. Her romantic and soulful pop releases have been extremely well received over the last year, receiving over 7m streams on Spotify and reaching #7 on the US Global Viral Chart. Her latest melancholy indie-pop release Youth is no exception. TalentAI data illustrates its growth, highlighting its addition to Starred, MrSuicideSheep and #WCE Women Crush Everyday tastemaker playlists on Spotify.

5) Manu Crook$ - hit 4.23 million playlist followers

Hailing from the Western Suburbs of Sydney, Manu Crooks breaks away from the traditional Australian hip-hop sound. His unique delivery and hard-hitting synth-heavy bars have made waves. Following the release of new track Presence, TalentAI data shows that Manu peaked at 4.23 million playlist followers this month, featuring on Mellow Bars, Clout Culture and Hip Hop Mixtape.
