Meet the Team: David Cooper

I grew up in the East Village in NYC and have been passionate about music since I started playing the guitar at the age of 9. I graduated from University of Michigan in 2015 with a degree in American History and before joining Instrumental, I’ve worked at Sony Music and Mimeo.

What does your role entail?

I reach out to A&Rs and music scouts around the US to learn how they’re scouting and see if Instrumental can help them out. It’s really cool to get to know people, understand what’s important to them, and build connections while sharing a great product.

What’s the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is working with a product that is truly disruptive in an industry that I’m so passionate about. I get to work with an excellent team and build something that I actually believe in. In addition, I get to talk and think about music all day. What could be better??

What did you want to be when you were little?

The lead guitarist in a touring rock band. I’m still working on this.

In your spare time, what do you get up to?

I love practising guitar and rehearsing with my band. There’s nothing quite like letting your mind wander off with a guitar in your hands. I also love exploring NYC with my friends as much as possible, you can live here your whole life and never visit every restaurant, bar, or neighborhood that you want to. It’s truly endless.

What’s your earliest memory?

Dancing with my parents to Paul Simon’s Graceland album as a little kid in my living room. It’s still my favourite album to this very day.

You have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick?

I love karaoke. Definitely, something that gets the audience pumped up -- my go-to’s are always “Sweet Caroline”, “Roxanne”, or “Your Love” by The Outfield.

What fictional world or place would you like to visit?

My favourite author as a kid was always Roald Dahl, so obviously Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. I would take the great glass elevator into every single room and channel my inner Augustus Gloop, eating everything I could get my hands on.

What is your cellphone wallpaper?

A picture of Cataract Gorge I took while hiking in Tasmania. Tasmania is such a beautiful, wild, and rugged part of the world. You should definitely go visit!
