Using our music scouting platform, we’ve analysed a data set of over 1300 influential Spotify playlists (those with over 10,000 followers), to uncover the future stars on the fastest growing playlists.
K-Pop originated in South Korea during the 90s, incorporating elements of Western pop, hip-hop, rock and traditional Korean music. After a slump in the popularity of this original brand of K-pop, the noughties and the rise of social media encouraged its return with a new wave of stars. Spotify’s ‘Bubblegum K-Pop’ playlist has grown by 139,599 playlist followers over the past six months to over 180,000. Clocking a massive 340% increase, it is clear that K-Pop has become a global phenomenon.
Dreamcatcher is a South Korean girl group formed by Happy Face Entertainment. Previously known as MINX, in November 2016 they announced that they were to re-launch under their new name, Dreamcatcher, welcoming two new members.
The seven-piece now consists of; JiU, SuA, Siyoin, Handong, Yoohyeon, Dami and Gahyeon, Under their new moniker, they debuted “Nightmare” in January 2017. Drawing heavily upon K-Pop’s rock roots, the group’s huge ballads and breakdowns have been picked up by a global audience.
In February 2018, Dreamcatcher became the first K-Pop girl group to complete a global tour, visiting London, Lisbon, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, Warsaw and Paris. With the second mini album in their ‘Nightmare’ series, Dreamcatcher released ‘Escape the Era’, generating a huge increase in their Spotify following.
With features on 15 influential playlists, including KPop Party and Bubblegum K-Pop, Dreamcatcher have picked up over 950,000 playlist followers in the past 7 days. With a growing global audience, the group have also enjoyed a growing direct following, adding 2,700 new followers to their 75,000 total in the past 7 days alone (Instrumental Music Scouting Platform).
Weki Meki is South Korean girl group formed by South Korean Entertainment Company Fantagio in 2017. The group consists of eight members; Ji Suyeon, Elly, Choi Yoo-jung, Kim Do-yeon, Sei, Rina and Lucy. The members started out as trainees under i-Teen, a talent development program ran by Fantagio.
Weki Meki released their debut EP ‘WEME’ in August 2017, sharing six tracks, including their huge hit “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend”, which has picked up over 3.6 million streams to date. According to South Korean chart, Gaon Music, by November the EP had sold over 47,000 physical copies, making it the highest selling girl group debut in 2017.
With features on 18 influential Spotify playlists including Bubblegum K-Pop, Weki Meki have over 2.5m playlist followers, with “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend” responsible for 37.49% of their following. Enjoying significant engagement with their music, the group have also picked up over 142,000 direct followers (Instrumental Music Scouting Platform).
