5 LGBTQI+ country/folk artists making waves right now
The fourth and final article in our Pride artist round up focuses on some of the best up-and-coming talent from the country/folk world. Relax with acoustic tracks from Ireland, Canada, the UK and USA, proving that authentic expression can be found in even the most traditional music genres.
Bringing classic Irish folk sounds into the present day, singer-songwriter Dani Larkin has seen a 4 point increase to her Spotify popularity score since releasing her new album ‘Notes For a Maiden Warrior’. Tracks from the album feature in Spotify playlists with over 3 million cumulative followers, including Fresh Folk and Queer as Folk, as well as the Irish playlist A Breath of Fresh Eire. Since releasing her album on June 18th, Dani Larkin’s Spotify following has grown by 21%, with radio support from BBC.
Since the release of her album ‘Outside Child’ on May 21st, Canadian artist Allison Russell has more than doubled her Spotify following, with tracks featuring in huge editorial folk playlists. Allison Russell’s music delicately weaves together folk, blues and indie influences into a sound that is completely her own, attracting 350k monthly listeners.on Spotify and over 320k views on her YouTube channel in the past 30 days alone.
Brandon Stansell has been advocating for the LGBTQI+ community within country music since he launched his music career in 2015. Fresh off the release of his latest single ‘This Must Be The Place’, Stansell is one to watch within the genre with his tracks transcending just LGBTQI+ country playlists and landing in Spotify’s New Music Nashville and Young Nashville. The Spotify algorithm has picked up Stansell, adding him to several particle detector playlists including The Edge of Redneck and Texas Country.
In the modern streaming age, consistency is key. While many of the artists on this list have built their careers around album and EP releases, Mae Krell has built an audience around a steady flow of single releases, including 2020’s ‘Home’, which was licensed through frtyfve and currently has over 600k streams. Their track ‘Letters to the Hospital’ from the 2018 ‘Anabasis’ EP also currently features in Spotify’s Queer as Folk playlist alongside established artists like Julien Baker and Orville Peck.
The advocate magazine declared Californian singer-songwriter Jaime Wyatt “the new queer queen of outlaw country” following the release of her album ‘Neon Cross’, which has amassed over 2 million streams on Spotify since its release in May 2020. The title track from the album was featured in Spotify’s Best Folk and Americana 2020 playlist, while other tracks feature in PRIDE: Nashville and the alternative country playlist Indigo.
